Lagos governor describes late statesman as “transparent, patriotic leader” who served Nigeria with unblemished record
Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has joined national mourning for former President Muhammadu Buhari, characterizing his passing as “a colossal loss” to Nigeria. In a condolence message issued Sunday, the governor praised Buhari’s disciplined leadership across multiple decades of public service.
“Former President Buhari demonstrated unparalleled patriotism in steering Nigeria’s ship through turbulent times,” Sanwo-Olu stated, noting the deceased leader’s service as military governor, petroleum minister, military head of state, and two-term civilian president. The governor particularly highlighted Buhari’s “transparent and courageous” governance style that maintained an unblemished record.
Sanwo-Olu recalled Buhari’s sacrificial commitment to national development, citing his roles in establishing key national institutions and stabilizing Nigeria’s security architecture. “He sacrificed the greater part of his life to nation-building, leaving blueprints younger leaders now follow,” the tribute read.
The governor extended sympathies to President Bola Tinubu, the Buhari family, and APC party leaders, stressing that the late president’s legacy transcends political divides. He specifically acknowledged Hajia Aisha Buhari and the people of Daura, Katsina State, urging Nigerians to honor Buhari’s memory by upholding his values of integrity and selfless service.
“May God grant our nation the fortitude to bear this irreplaceable loss,” Sanwo-Olu prayed, while pledging Lagos State’s support for funeral arrangements. The message comes as tributes pour in globally for Nigeria’s historic leader who passed away weeks after his 81st birthday.
