In a heartwarming display of gratitude and recognition, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, the Chief of Army Staff of the Nigerian Army (NA), publicly lauded the Kwara State Government for their unwavering support to the family of late Major Segun Oni, a valiant officer who tragically lost his life during a counter-insurgency operation in Niger State on August 13, 2023.
During a solemn condolence visit held at the Army Headquarters on Tuesday, February 27, 2024, General Lagbaja took the opportunity to extend his appreciation to Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRasaq and various State Government officials for their exceptional assistance and aid provided to the bereaved family of the fallen soldier.
Expressing gratitude for the support received, General Lagbaja underscored the significance of such gestures in upholding the morale of military personnel and their families.
Emphasizing the traditional protocol followed by the Nigerian Army in engaging with the Next of Kin (NOK) of deceased personnel, General Lagbaja reiterated the importance of maintaining close ties with the families of fallen heroes, particularly in times of tragedy resulting from operational engagements.
He further attributed the commendable peace and stability witnessed in Kwara State to the collaborative efforts between the local populace and the military, affirming the NA’s commitment to enhancing security measures in the region.
The governor reciprocated the sentiment, expressing profound appreciation for the Nigerian Army’s relentless efforts in addressing security challenges across the nation.
He acknowledged the immortalization of Major Segun Oni in Kaduna State and called upon Nigerians to continue offering prayers and support to the families of fallen servicemen.

The visit ended on a good note as Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRasaq presented a cheque of undisclosed value to Mrs. Olubunmi Mariam Oni, the spouse and Next of Kin of the late Major Segun Oni, symbolizing the state’s commitment to standing by the families of fallen heroes during their time of need.
