Honourable Commissioner Marks World Water Day 2024 with Call for Unity and Sustainability

… Emphasises Importance of Water for Peace and Cooperation in Lagos State

In commemoration of World Water Day 2024, the Honourable Commissioner for the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, Mr Tokunbo Wahab, delivered a keynote address highlighting the theme “Water for Peace.”

Mr Wahab underscored the pivotal role of water in fostering peace and cooperation among communities, emphasising its significance not only for sustaining life but also for building bridges between people. He stressed the importance of addressing water scarcity and inequities in access to mitigate conflicts and promote a more peaceful society.

The commissioner referenced the recently approved Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) Policy as a guiding framework towards ensuring universal access to clean water and sanitation in Lagos State. He outlined the holistic approach of the policy, which includes strategies for conservation, pollution prevention, and equitable distribution, reaffirming the commitment to leaving no one behind in the quest for water peace.

Furthermore, Mr Wahab highlighted the initiatives of the Lagos Urban WASH program, supported by USAID, as a demonstration of the state’s dedication to promoting water security and sustainability in urban areas. He detailed ongoing activities such as the rehabilitation of Micro/Mini Water works for Lagos Water Corporation and capacity building for the Lagos State Water Regulatory Commission.

Stating, “As we mark the year 2024 World Water Day, Let us pledge to work together, across borders and sectors, to ensure that water remains a source of unity rather than division. Together, we can create a world where every drop of water contributes to the greater good, forging a path towards a more peaceful and prosperous future for the residents of Lagos State.”
