…Wahab says Lagos ready to partner on cross-border environmental enforcement

The Lagos State Commissioner for Environment, Tokunbo Wahab, has applauded the Ogun State Government for its swift response to the reported lead contamination crisis in Ogijo, Sagamu.
Wahab commended Ogun’s Environment Commissioner, Ola Oresanya, describing the shutdown of facilities and suspension of lead ingot exportation as a bold step to protect public health. He added that Lagos is prepared to work closely with Ogun State to address cross-border pollution and enforce stricter environmental compliance, especially across industrial clusters shared by both states.
“We are ready to collaborate with Ogun State to ensure industries operating along our shared boundaries meet environmental standards,” Wahab said, stressing the need for joint enforcement to safeguard communities living near industrial corridors.
Earlier in the week, the Ogun State Government ordered an immediate temporary suspension of lead ingot exports and sealed seven Used Lead-Acid Battery (ULAB) recycling facilities in Ogijo. The decision followed an on-the-spot inspection triggered by a viral video alleging toxic contamination in the area.
The inspection team comprised officials from the Ogun State Ministries of Environment and Health, the Ogun State Environmental Protection Agency (OGEPA), and the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA).
Officials said the shutdown serves as a clear message that environmental safety and public health are non-negotiable.
Wahab noted that Lagos continues to enforce sanitation laws, strengthen waste management systems, restore blocked drainage channels, and expand environmental surveillance to create a safer ecosystem for residents of both states.
