Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources Tokunbo Wahab marked June 12 with a personal tribute to his late mother, Mrs. Muyi Wahab, who died on Democracy Day in 1993. The date holds dual significance – commemorating Nigeria’s democratic struggle while honoring his mother’s legacy as a grassroots campaigner for MKO Abiola.
Mrs. Wahab, a key organizer for Abiola’s Social Democratic Party in Epe and Sagamu, passed away hours after casting her vote in the historic 1993 election. Her son, then just 21, has carried forward her political activism, now serving as one of Governor Sanwo-Olu’s most visible commissioners.
Known for bold environmental reforms including the Styrofoam ban and drainage clearings, Wahab credits his mother’s influence for his three-decade political journey. “She remains my heroine alongside MKO Abiola,” the commissioner reflected. Colleagues describe Mrs. Wahab as a formidable mobilizer whose democratic ideals continue shaping her son’s work in the Sanwo-Olu administration.
