.. Transportation Committee Chair Condemns Fatal Assault by Union Member
Lagos State House of Assembly Transportation Committee Chairman Hon. Adewale Temitope Adedeji has called for the full prosecution of National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) member Shamsideen Adio and his associates, following the fatal assault of a dispatch rider on Tapa Street, Lagos Island.
In a strongly-worded statement released Saturday, the lawmaker described circulated video evidence of the September 18 incident as “barbaric, shameful, and heartbreaking,” showing Adio continuing attacks even as witnesses attempted to resuscitate the unconscious victim. Adedeji emphasized that the sanctity of human life remains inviolable, regardless of provocation.
“The police must ensure logical conclusion of this case to serve as a lesson to those who disregard human dignity,” stated the legislator, while commending law enforcement’s swift arrest of the primary suspect. He further urged NURTW Lagos leader Alhaji Adekunle Mustapha Seigo to immediately suspend Adio and dissociate the union from the act during ongoing judicial processes.
The incident has sparked calls for improved member education within transport unions, with Adedeji highlighting the need for continuous enlightenment programs to prevent future tragedies. The victim, whose identity remains officially undisclosed, was reportedly pursuing lawful livelihood activities prior to the attack.
