…Tokunbo Wahab emphasizes enforcement of regulations at Lagos real estate conference

The Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources is set to roll out new waste conversion projects in the coming months, according to Commissioner Tokunbo Wahab. Speaking at the 5th Lagos Real Estate Marketplace Conference & Exhibition, hosted by the Lagos State Real Estate Regulatory Authority (LASRERA), Wahab underscored the critical role of environmental agencies in maintaining green standards and driving sustainable growth in Lagos’ booming real estate sector.  

Wahab, delivering his closing remarks as a panelist, drew a comparison between the advanced economies of the West and Nigeria’s current challenges, citing enforcement of regulations as the key differentiator. “The gap lies in our ability or otherwise to enforce our rules and regulations,” he said.  

The commissioner highlighted the ministry’s commitment to effective waste management, announcing plans to launch waste-to-value initiatives as part of the state’s broader environmental strategy. “Green standards cannot be compromised,” Wahab stated, emphasizing the active involvement of agencies such as the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), and Lagos State Parks and Gardens Agency (LASPARK).  

These agencies, Wahab added, will not only serve as partners but also as critical stakeholders in fostering a cleaner Lagos. The state government aims to ensure that its rapid urbanization and real estate growth align with sustainability goals.  

The conference, a major annual event, serves as a platform to discuss opportunities and challenges in Lagos’ thriving real estate market, which has seen exponential growth in recent years. Stakeholders from the public and private sectors attended the event to address issues ranging from regulatory compliance to sustainable development.  

Wahab’s remarks reaffirm the Lagos State government’s commitment to balancing economic growth with environmental sustainability, ensuring a cleaner, greener future for the state.
