Bode Agoro, the Lagos State Head of Service, has called on Directors of Administration and Human Resources within the public service to focus on succession planning to bridge the leadership gap and enhance service delivery. Agoro made these remarks while inaugurating a three-day retreat for public service directors in Epe, Lagos. The event aimed to address key challenges and promote innovative strategies within the administrative framework of Lagos State.

With the theme, “Leadership Development and Succession Planning: Ensuring a Robust Talent Management for Effective Service Delivery,” Agoro underscored the significance of leadership development and talent management in state ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs). “Leadership development expands individuals’ capacity to perform effectively in leadership roles, ensuring that organizational strategies are well-executed,” he stated.

As part of the broader strategy for supporting public servants, Agoro announced that discussions are underway with Seun Faleye, Managing Director of the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF), to incorporate the Employee Compensation Scheme into the state’s benefits for public service staff. This initiative is expected to offer enhanced protections, including death and disability benefits, to Lagos State employees.

Agoro encouraged directors to foster leadership within themselves and their teams, emphasizing that proactive leaders are essential to meet the increasing demands on public service. He noted that the state’s approach to leadership development goes beyond traditional training, advocating for a culture of talent management that identifies and prepares future leaders to address upcoming challenges.

Agoro also urged directors to embody ethical values that reflect the principles of the Lagos State public service, creating a model for younger officers to emulate. By setting an example of positive leadership, he stated, department heads could foster an environment conducive to effective succession planning.

Permanent Secretary of the Public Service Office, Sunkanmi Oyegbola, welcomed participants, urging directors to embrace the opportunity to develop leaders within their respective MDAs. “It’s essential to have well-prepared succession plans in place, so that capable leaders are ready to assume roles when needed,” Oyegbola added.

The retreat, which attracted over 75 directors, featured interactive sessions led by experienced facilitators, providing directors a platform to share insights and best practices across various MDAs. Agoro expressed confidence in the outcome of the sessions, urging attendees to engage actively and leverage the networking opportunities available to enhance leadership across Lagos State’s public service.
