The National Theatre in Lagos has responded vehemently to allegations of corruption levelled against its management by Chief Kehinde Kalejaiye. In a detailed statement released today, the Management refuted the claims, branding them as a vendetta stemming from Kalejaiye’s terminated contract in 2022. The allegations, made in a video, were dismissed as false, misinformed, and an attempt to tarnish the Theatre’s reputation.
The National Theatre clarified its operational framework, highlighting its status as a Federal Government parastatal governed by a Board established by the National Assembly. It operates under the Ministry of Art, Culture, and the Creative Economy, adhering strictly to governmental procedures and regulations. The ongoing renovation, initiated through a memorandum of understanding with the Bankers Committee of Nigeria, led by the Central Bank, aims to revamp the Theatre’s infrastructure.
Regarding the disposal of obsolete materials, the Management emphasisedadherence to government regulations, documenting and auctioning these materials. Proceeds from auctions were deposited directly into the Treasury Single Account. The Management clarified that an audit conducted in 2021 did not result in any indictment, rather posing queries that were comprehensively addressed. They highlighted the distinction between an audit query and an indictment.
Denying awareness of any petition to the ICPC, the Management pointed out the activities of a group, “Concerned Stakeholders of the National Theatre,” allegedly propagating falsehoods on social media. They highlighted disciplinary actions against staff involved in misconduct, attributing their actions to Kalejaiye’s influence. Moreover, they refuted claims of custodianship of FESTAC 77 artefacts, citing specific government agencies tasked with this responsibility.
The Management clarified the termination of Chief Kalejaiye’s tolling contract due to restricted public access during the renovation. They detailed an incident where armed individuals associated with Kalejaiye attempted to forcefully resume tolling, resulting in police intervention and a subsequent legal case.
Highlighting past illegal dealings by Kalejaiye and collaborators, the Management portrayed ongoing threats and smear campaigns against them. They affirmed their commitment to upholding the Theatre’s integrity while urging the public to disregard Kalejaiye’s misinformation.
