The Lagos State Government will on Thursday, September 26, 2025, take center stage at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York as it presents a high-level programme titled “Lagos Leads the Future: Subnational Climate Action for the Global South.”
The official UNGA 80 side event, which will take place at The Times Center, 242 W 41st Street, New York, from 4:00 p.m. Nigerian time, is being convened by the Lagos State Office of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in collaboration with key ministries and agencies.
The programme will spotlight Lagos as a model for subnational action on climate adaptation and sustainability, particularly in addressing the challenges faced by coastal cities in the Global South.
Leading the delegation is the Special Adviser to the Governor on SDGs, Dr. Oreoluwa Finnih, who will host the event. She will be joined by the Honourable Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab; Honourable Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka; and Honourable Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget, Mr. Mosoppefolu George. The General Manager of the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), Dr. Babatunde Ajayi, is also billed to speak.
The UNGA 80 side event will also highlight regional cooperation along the Gulf of Guinea and present Lagos’ Climate Adaptation and Resilience Plan as a framework for action that can be replicated across other coastal cities in Africa.
