…Tokunbo Wahab: “Celebrations Must Not Compromise Public Health”

The Lagos State Government has reinforced its commitment to combating noise pollution during the festive season and beyond. This declaration was made during a press conference held at the Ministry of Environment Conference Room in Alausa, Ikeja, by the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, alongside the General Manager of the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), Dr. Babatunde Ajayi.

Addressing the media, Mr. Wahab acknowledged that while the Yuletide season brings heightened celebrations, unregulated noise pollution poses significant health and environmental risks. He emphasized that the state government is determined to ensure that public health and well-being are prioritized, even amidst the festivities.

In line with this commitment, the government has established a Special Task Force on Noise Pollution under LASEPA. This task force, which collaborates with the Lagos State Neighborhood Safety Corps (LSNSC) and the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC), will be responsible for monitoring, arresting, and prosecuting violators of noise regulations.

Mr. Wahab further stressed that establishments such as worship centers, nightclubs, lounges, and bars must obtain permits for events involving amplified sound and adhere to the requirement of operating within soundproofed, enclosed spaces to protect neighboring residents. He noted that intensified public awareness campaigns will commence in January 2025 to educate Lagosians on acceptable noise levels and the benefits of a quieter environment.

“Festivities are important, but so is our collective well-being,” Mr. Wahab said. “We urge everyone to celebrate responsibly and respect noise limits as we work towards a healthier and more livable Lagos for all.”
